Towards effort recognition, Haiba Foundation will award the top 2007 KCPE and KCSE students for
educational excellence.
As a non-profit, Haiba Foundation mobilizes resources for development. Based in Kibera, Nairobi’s
largest informal settlement, the Foundation believes that Educational excellence is a practical way
out of the unemployment and lost youth characteristic of Kibera. The theme of the day is Education
for the Muslim Child: Meeting the Challenge. By working and giving to the community, your
participation will encourage more to excel. Several community and Muslim scholars will grace the occasion.
The modest budget is Kenya shillings 90,000 (awards 30,000, refreshments/meals 20,000, promotional

The Kibera Appeal.
Following the recent Post-Election violence Around 600 people are feared
dead, with around half a million reported to have been displaced.
The violence has mainly affected Kibera which is a major opposition stronghold
in the country. Unfortunately, thousands of innocent souls have been caught
up in the scruffles between the police the oppposition supporters.
The Displace, Injured, and Sick
The internally displaced persons (IDPs) are currently sheltering in parks, churches, police
stations and public compounds. Reported incidents of rape have risen dramatically; with the Nairobi Womens
Hospital reporting levels more than double those before the protests began.
Transportation in and out of Kibera is beginning to resume as road blocks are lifted and the
security situation improves.
However, the violence is escalating and the number of IDPs is increasing. These people are in urgent
need of adequate shelter, food and water, clothing and medical aid. Those worst affected are children,
women and the elderly.
The Haibafoundation Emergency Response
Haibafoundation has decided to launch an emergency appeal to raise £10,000 to help
the victims of the Kibera Settlement.
The project will initially focus on helping the most affected victims, i.e.
The displaced and the sick or injured persons by providing essential items such as
Medicine, blankets, mosquito nets, and kitchen kits, and medicine.
Your donation can help those affected by the crisis.

Report Of Education Awards Ceremony
April 22nd, 2007
Kibra Academy, Nairobi.
HAIBA Foundation's sobriety to the inner city's ring of self-perpetuating poor
academic performance and dropping out of school propelled the education awards
ceremony as a motivation for academic excellence. Around 50 students and 40
parents graced the auspicious day for awarding best Nubian students in Kibra
from the 2006 National Examinations; Kenya Certificate of Primary education
(KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
After recitation of the Holy Quran, Mrs. Mariam Alambo welcomed all guests and
informed them that HAIBA Foundation was honored by their huge turn out. A pupil
from Olympic primary school recited a poem on the importance of education followed
by a poem from students of Kibra Academy which also made a plea to parents to take
children to school as it changes their life dramatically.
Yaqub Rubey Juma, a medical student from the University of Nairobi highlighted the
challenges in the search of education and advised the students to set
their goals and remain focused. In addition, the call for educating the girl
child was highlighted since an educated child was an asset to the community.
Additionally, Yaqub called for priotization of importance among the Nubian community.
Importance of Education: Mrs. Zena Mohammeds Speech
Starting off the guest speakers was Mrs. Zena Mohammed who emphasized on the importance
of education. Since gaining knowledge was an on going process with
its successes and challenges, Mrs. Zena reiterated that education was the best investment
parents could give their children as it provided them with a strong foundation for the future.
By the government's provision of Free Primary Education, Mrs. Zena urged parents to fully
embrace the opportunity to take children to school. She also called for the communal support to
Kibra Day Academy either through admission, financial or material support. She also cited
encouragement and sharing ideas were handy to boost the education institution in the community.
Mrs. Zena advised parents to encourage pupils or students to remain in school and further
their education despite the difficulties they were facing since this would be direct
investment into their future and indeed collective future of the Nubian Community.
She said that the important others have great role to play by showing interest, encouraging
them and by being involved in their school work and extra curricular activities.
Mrs. Zena remarked that the Award's Ceremony attested to the commitment of recognizing
and rewarding students who had excelled in the 2006 national examinations. She advised
the students, especially the girl child not to compromise and put their life in a position
that will make them drop out of school but to set their goals and to remain focused. She
affirmed that whatever the set back the students might face, let them treat it as a pause
and not the end of education since education had no end nor limit; one could always go back
and continue with studies. She urged them that by staying in school, concentrating on their
studies and achieving their educational objectives, they were indeed uplifting the whole community.
In her closing remarks, Mrs. Zena stressed that going to school was an eye opening
experience where one learns and discovers a lot. She advised the students again to stay
in school and in all they undertake, she urged them to do their best and strive to excel.
Mr. Ibrahim Ambers Speech
Mr. Ibrahim Amber took to the podium and felt elated that finally after many years a
group like HAIBA had enlisted the importance of academic excellence amongst the Nubian
Community. He was equally amazed by the fact that HAIBA would like to congratulate the
best students in education, an act which made him shed tears since such a thing had never
taken place among the Nubian Community, a reason, which he attributed to poor performance
amongst the Nubian Community's children.
An experienced professional teacher, Maalim Amber, made the guests and the students hold their
ribs by giving the riddle of a ``Laabi'' who beat his son thoroughly for becoming no. 1 out of 50.
The father was ignorant about school performance and he punished the son for apparently
performing badly in school instead of being no. 50, which he considered should be the best,
thinking logically about the strength of numeracy. The child was left wondering why he
should accomplish much without the appreciation from his father! He warned the community
not to attest to such ignorance.
The teacher implored that the Nubian Community got to think about praising their childrens'
educational excellence and wondered loudly why the community is being marginalized in education
too despite having had great teachers. He also queried why there are unutilized educational
facilities like Kibra Academy and the Madrasatul Fallah.
He commended the HAIBA Foundation and urged them to continue with the community work as
jaza min rabbuna. He pledged that the elders were ready to fundraise for the next prize
giving as an impetus to ensure more students received the awards.
Mrs. Zuwena Twahas Speech
The next guest speaker Zuwena Twaha, a practicing accountant, encouraged the KCSE graduates to
identify the course they would like to pursue and for the ones who did not perform well, to
secure entrance into public universities to join tertiary colleges
since education was the key to success. She urged the candidates to put more effort and utilize the
available educational opportunities. On Mathematics, Zuwena emphasized that the subject was not difficult as
perceived and that practice and effort to excel was the only secret.
Mr. Mohammed Jaffer Jikalos Speech
Mohammed Jaffer Jikalo, a journalist from BBC, seized the opportunity and profusely thanked the
Haiba Foundation for the noble work they were doing, which was Sadaqatul Jariyah. He reminded all
present that Allah tells them through his prophet that " Man Salakah tariq ilal ilm, Salakah
Alllah lahu tariq ilal Janah" which literally means "Whoever embarks on pursuing education/knowledge
[or assist others to acquire knowledge], then Allah will pave the way for him/her to enter Paradise."
Thus, by engaging in educational activities, Haiba Foundation was indeed implementing the glorious
hadeeth of the Prophet (PBUH).
Mohammed also went ahead and pointed that the Prophet (PBUH) also said that " Man Aradah Dunia
fa aliyhi bil ilm , waman aradah Akheera fa aliyhi bil ilm, wa man aradah man fa aliyhi bil ilm".
This means that whoever wants to live a comfortable life in this world should seek knowledge, and
whoever aspires to enter paradise should seek knowledge and whoever wants both dunia and akheera
should seek knowledge. This Hadeeth stresses on the importance and need to get knowledge. Knowledge
increment makes a person to worship Allah in accordance with what pleases Allah.
S/he can/is able to perform her/his religious duties such as ablution or the daily five prayers
without any hitch or difficulties.
Mohammed reminded the students that when one is educated or has knowledge, it becomes
easier for her/him to secure employment and uplift her/his living standards and the wider Nubian
community. He reminded all present that all human will be responsible to Allah on the Day of Judgment,
whether doctors, engineers, accountants or journalists on what they did with the knowledge they
acquired. Did they pass it over to family members, relatives and members of
their community since the Prophet (PBUH) lauded those who acquire knowledge then impart it on others.
"Khayr kum man taallam Quran waalamahu" meaning the best among you is the one who learns the Quran
then pass over that knowledge to others. Muhammad informed both students and their parents that when they
educate a member of the community they reduce the number of idle youth, who could otherwise be a "health
hazard" as the youth will engage in mugging activities besides preventing the girl child from early
and unwanted pregnancies. He made a passionate appeal to parents to ensure that they offer their
children with both secular and religious education without differentiating on sexuality. He commented
that the combination of secular knowledge and spiritual nourishment was both important in life.
In conclusion, he requested all the other professionals within the Nubian community to join Haiba
Foundation and community service to the community which was facing numerous challenges and conspiracies to destroy it.
Dr. Asha, the Chairlady of HAIBA Foundation, took the opportunity to thank all guests for emphasizing
the importance of education among the Nubian Community. She invited the Chief Guest Essa AbdulFaraj,
who has been a strong pillar amongst the Nubians. Many will for long remember and thank him for
facilitating their POSTA employments.
Mr. Essa AbdulFaraj's Speech
Mr. AbdulFaraj said that the Award Day was a great day since the Nubians accepted the clarion
call to award their students who had excelled in education. And he told all excellees ``Abshir
Aleik!'' Conquering with all speakers before him, Mr. AbdulFaraj re-emphasized that focus and
mission was very important in whatever endeavor any one decided to partake as this shaped the
hierarchy of self achievement.
He advised parents that in case students under-performed in the KCSE, they could be taken to form
five and six in Uganda, an opportunity that will provide them entrance into Makerere University.
Additionally, he urged the parents to supervise their children against peer pressure imitation.
He highlighted impact of fad, drug abuse e.t.c and that once children are not patronized, they
become uncontrollable and even fight their parents, an attribute which Mr. Abdulfaraj blamed on
non patronization by parents. He affirmed that reprimanding children was NOT wrong since even the
time of prophet Ibrahim (A.W) he prayed to Allah to give him good children who were apple of their eyes,
to be people of integrity and good leaders in this world. Essa wondered why as a prophet he was asking
this despite being God's messenger.
However, he insisted that once parents patronize their children, this will have impact on them.
He accentuated that as a marginalized community, their strength was in educating their children
to have a high ranged professionalism base. For students, he urged them not to postpone their
daily work and not to defer any current work for the following day, since the tendency is to overload
that day's work, which will lead to overloading of the system and this leads to systematic break down,
which eventually leads to failure. Finally, he called for support for the Kibra Nursery and Academy by
taking their children there, since that was the greatest support the institutions could get from their
community members.
To cap the climax of the day, Dr. Saidi Hassan, HAIBA's Foundation Vice Chairperson gave the vote
of thanks for the students who excelled in education with good performance and promised them that
HF will continue monitoring their performance in whatever endeavor they will undertake.
For the sitting candidates, he wished them all the best in their studies and informed them that
HF was strategizing for tutorials, a process which could assist them. Finally, he thanked all for
turning up for the educational award, an act which elated HF. He welcomed all for lunch and
refreshments, as guests departed at their leisure.
